For Liverpool to potentially propel Jürgen Klopp toward a treble or quadruple in January, just one transfer is required. The Reds really ought to make a hire.

The holidays are over, and the new year is almost here. And Liverpool has a genuine opportunity to win big in 2024. At this halfway point in the Premier League season, the top three teams are still in contention for three additional trophies.
A few would have dared to suggest that Manchester City would have dropped as many points as it has, and even fewer would have predicted that Liverpool would be as far along in its rebuilding process at this point. Because of the combination of those two elements, Jürgen Klopp’s team is squarely in the running for the championship.
As usual, Manchester City could go on a protracted winning streak, but it also seems improbable that Pep Guardiola’s team will be quite as strong this time around. Although it’s always possible, a closer race to the finish line seems likely, with Arsenal having a strong chance as well.

But Liverpool should think about making a January transfer if tiny differences are going to matter greatly. Wataru Endō’s departure for AFCON notwithstanding, Alexis Mac Allister’s return ought to cover for the Japanese. Thus, a midfielder is not the team’s top priority right now.
Liverpool should jump at the chance to acquire a truly elite holding player, but the likelihood of that occurring in the middle of the season seems remote. That would be something to think about should the proper opportunity present itself.
More importantly, though, Liverpool must make every effort to locate a qualified candidate within its defense. Both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are sidelined with injuries, but both will return to action this season—Robertson possibly even before the end of the following month—but 2024 will still require the signing of another left-sided defender. Now would be a good time to give it a try.

To replace Virgil van Dijk and provide another option at full-back, Liverpool needs to add a player who can play on the left side of its center-back tandem. Joe Gomez is able to play all positions on the back line, but not simultaneously. For the next few weeks at least, he will need to start every game at left-back, which will severely limit the options at the other positions.
Given that Van Dijk is now 32 years old and Joël Matip’s contract expires at the end of the season, Liverpool should think about their options at the back as soon as possible. And it might be crucial to make that acquisition to strengthen a defense that is starting to show its age.
Klopp has previously argued that it can be difficult to sign the perfect player during the winter transfer window. However, Liverpool finds itself in a situation it probably didn’t anticipate, and one that should be taken advantage of.
It really should be obvious if signing a left-sided defender is Liverpool’s top priority in the long run, and if doing so could help Klopp win another Premier League title and maybe one or two other trophies as well (the Reds are the favorites to win the Carabao Cup and the Europa League). Many names will be mentioned, but one move could be the difference that keeps Liverpool from wondering “what if?” in the future.

“I have agreed to return back to Arsenal but they must sell this guy…He was the one who joined hand with Kai Havertz and orchestrated everything that led to my departure”: Former Arsenal attacker David de Gea names ONE ex-teammate who frustrated him out of the club
With Martinelli unable to achieve anything substantial, despite his slightly improved performance yesterday, and Emile Smith Rowe progressively recapturing his old form at Fulham, I believe that this question will probably not split many Arsenal supporters at this moment. I believe this since both of these players are currently making progress. The issue that arises is: what was it that Arteta noticed about Martinelli that he did not notice about ESR?
Emile is a much more well-rounded player, with higher technical ability and passing, and anyone who has ever seen football would undoubtedly admit this fact. That he is a better dribbler than Martinelli is another point of contention that may be made. Even a few years ago, Emile shown that he is more than capable of providing goals to this squad when he is cutting in from the left side of the pitch. It is possible that Arteta lost trust in ESR’s capacity to maintain his fitness rather than in his ability to be a member of the squad. Is this a plausible explanation?
Being accessible is perhaps Gabriel Martinelli’s most valuable asset at the moment, much like Ben White is (often) in this situation. Other than that and great straight line speed, he does not appear to offer much else anymore, which is unfortunate because he too showed great promise that has not really materialised into anything other than high-velocity sprints towards the touchline, which typically culminate in an aimless low cross into the box. Additionally, he does not appear to offer much else.
Maarten Paes, who is typically put to the test by Lionel Messi, has admitted that he is not afraid to face the 2026 World Cup qualification opponents.
Although I do not believe that anybody could or should dispute his effort, he is a willing runner both moving forward and going backwards. However, as he is getting closer to the goal, he has a tendency to become tunnel-visioned, which is a bit disappointing. It is a quality that has the potential to make him a deadly striker if he were to ever play that position on a regular basis; yet, as a winger, he has to be able to pick out people who are in a better position, and this is presumably the reason why Arteta switches him out with Trossard so frequently.
My experience with Trossard has been nothing short of exasperating. Despite the fact that he possesses exceptional technical skill and always puts in a shift whenever he is on the pitch, he has never really managed to persuade me that he is of a quality that is sufficient to match the manager’s goals. At one point, I referred to him as a Poundland Eden Hazard, and I continue to believe that description perfectly. What he adds, however, is everything that Martinelli does not have, and the combination of the two of them is basically equivalent to what we had with Emile Smith Rowe: great technical ability paired with speed, dribbling, and an eye for the goal.
And should Arteta have given ESR more time to learn to trust his body again, because the Emile Smith Rowe of 2021/22 was so outstanding that he was perhaps better than Bukayo Saka at that time? Arteta sold the wrong player, and he should have given ESR more time to learn how to trust his body again. I do not feel that Martinelli’s skill set or top-level ceiling is even near to that of Smith Rowe. Trossard is already too old and is as good as he is ever going to be. Martinelli is also not going to grow much better.
In my opinion, it would have been more beneficial for Arteta to keep Smith Rowe and give him the opportunity to play on the left flank, just as he did when he was talented enough to be selected for the England team based on merit. Unfortunately, it seems as though those days are long gone, and even though there is a possibility of a buy-back option, I highly doubt that he would be ready to return to play for a manager that ignored him after he returned from injury, confining him to five-minute cameos in the incorrect position, and then selling him later on.

Breaking News: Marcus Rashford’s dangerous Barcelona transfer gamble as Man Utd star pushes for exit
Marcus Rashford is anticipated to go from Manchester United this month, as the forward is eager to get a loan transfer to Barcelona until the season’s conclusion, following his diminished standing under Ruben Amorim.
Marcus Rashford is willing to wait indefinitely to complete a loan transfer to Barcelona during the January transfer window.
Rashford is poised to depart Manchester United following his dismissal by new manager Ruben Amorim, who stated after his team’s 1-0 victory over Fulham on Sunday that he would prefer to place his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach on the bench rather than the forward.
“We lacked a certain tempo to alter the game and reposition some elements,” Amorim stated. “However, I favour it in that manner.” I would prioritise [Jorge] Vital over a player that does not consistently perform at their best, hence I will not make any changes in that regard.
It is invariably the same rationale. The cause is the training. My perspective on the responsibilities of a footballer in training, daily life, and overall conduct. If circumstances remain unchanged, I will not alter my behaviour. All players face the same circumstances; if you exert maximum effort and adhere to the correct protocols, we can utilise any player.
Rashford has garnered multiple offers from clubs globally; however, the Daily Star reports that he is determined to join Barcelona and is prepared to wait until the closing moments of the transfer window to finalise a move to the Nou Camp.
The 27-year-old’s substantial £350,000-per-week salary has posed a challenge for Barcelona, prompting them to seek the offloading of some players to generate funds for Rashford. Nonetheless, the opportunity for an agreement is diminishing, with the deadline approaching next Monday.
Rashford is reportedly prepared to accept a salary reduction to enable the transfer, and his representatives engaged in in-person discussions with club executives last week. Alejandro Garnacho has been associated with a possible departure this month, with Napoli and Chelsea expressing interest in the winger.
He has commenced United’s previous two matches, but when queried about Garnacho’s future, Amorim responded: “That is unknown to anyone.” Anything is possible; nonetheless, Garna is enhancing his performance in every aspect of the game, including his recovery, game comprehension, and defensive skills.
I am attempting to identify the optimal posture for him. Today, he played more externally rather than predominantly within. We require individuals to compete head-to-head, but the outcome remains uncertain until the conclusion of the timeframe.
